Employee motivation management- a brief introduction

Motivated employees are known to be an asset to an organization or a business platform. They are said to be directly proportional to an organization’s success. Therefore, employee motivation is intangible, difficult to measure, and also extremely difficult to control, but very easy to facilitate if done right. We can say that it’s all about intention, intensity, and perseverance. Before jumping into employee motivation management let’s think and learn something about what is employee motivation and how it is helpful.

What is Employee motivation?

Employee motivation is like enthusiasm, energy level, commitment, and the amount of creativity and hard work that an employee brings to the organization on a daily basis.

Motivation is known to be derived from the Latin word, “movere” which literally means movement. Therefore, all the definitions that you would read or come across in books or in dictionaries relate to the fact that motivation is behavior and one needs to channel this behavior in order to achieve desired goals and results.

Subsequently, employee motivation is all about how one is engaged an employee feels in tandem with the organization’s goals and how empowered he/she feels. Motivation in the field is of two types:

  • Intrinsic motivation
  • Extrinsic motivation

Types of employee motivation

There are two types of motivation, namely intrinsic and extrinsic. Therefore, a business platform needs to understand for a fact that not employees are clones, they are individuals with different traits. Thus, effectively motivating the employees will need to acquire a deeper understanding of the different types and ways of motivation.

Intrinsic motivation

Intrinsic motivation in a literal sense means that an individual is motivated from within. The employee has the desire to perform well at the workplace because the results are in accordance with his/her belief system.

Therefore, an individual’s deep-rooted beliefs are usually known to be the strongest motivational factor. Such employees show common qualities like acceptance, curiosity, honor, and desire to achieve success.

Extrinsic motivation

Alternatively, on the other side, extrinsic motivation means an individual’s motivation is stimulated by external factors- rewards and recognition. Therefore, some individuals may never be motivated internally and only external motivation would work with them to get the tasks done.

Taking it into a consideration, a motivated employee plays a significant role in a company’s success and growth. Employee motivation management and its step should be practiced and enrolled by each company for their purposeful growth and development.
